1)    Tenaciousness is a competency. Some behaviors that I used to keep up with this course is personal time management, and focus. I would have to block off certain times in my day/week to watch the video lectures, write the blog prompts and respond to my peers’ posts. Besides setting time apart to accomplish these things I also needed to focus while doing so. The “cupcakes” test random parts of the lecture, if you are not paying enough attention to all of the parts of the lecture than you could miss an answer to the cupcake. I also needed to focus and schedule in time to interview my colleagues and friends. Some assignments required us to interview a certain segment of people and reflect so this certainly required focus and time-management.
2)    Tenaciousness is also about attitude. One moment during the course when I felt like giving up was when I went home over the weekend to celebrate my 20thbirthday with my parents. I drive home that Friday so encapsulated by my excitement to see my parents that I completely forgot that I had two blog posts due that night. It proceeded that I was so happy to be in their presence, that I, in fact, did not turn the assignments in at all. It was that following Sunday when I realized what had happened, and I became so frustrated that there was no way to make up those points. And that my happiness prior had resulted in my frustration then. I tried to receive points for doing the peer reviews on time knowing they would not be accepted, but still got angry when I received the email from the TA that I would receive 0 points for it. What pulled me through is the thought that I had to do better next time and complete the posts further in advance so that there was no way I could simply forget. So yes, I do believe I have developed a tenacious attitude because I could have easily let my frustration turn in to resentment and continue to let my grade slip. It was certainly the feeling of disappointment in myself for forgetting that most contributed to this.
3)    Three tips. Three tips I would offer next semester’ students about tenacity in this course is to remain resilient even if you feel like it is too much work to fit in to your schedule, being able to adapt if things don’t always go accordingly to plan and knowing when / how to take breaks when you need one.

  1. Hi Emily,

it hasn't been the easiest semester but glad to hear we're all making it through it together! I agree that time management is one of the most important skills to possess, specifically to online classes like this one, where responsibility ultimately falls on the individual, us. I thought your tips were spot on, and hopefully help students in the future!
