2A Patton's Bug List

MY BUG LIST !!!
  1. A week after getting my eyebrows waxed and enduring that pain, the hairs grow back and I have to pluck them resulting in more pain.
WHY it exists: Societal norms that teach girls that they need to have shaped and clean eyebrows to feel pretty & the hair follicles around my eyebrows growing back at a faster rate than I would like.

2. Apple changing the Iphone 8 to not include a headphone jack so you need to buy a “dongle” to attach to your normal headphones to plug in to your phone.
WHY it exists: Apple “upgraded” the Iphone, but in reality made a feature that requires you to buy more products from them resulting in their gain of profit. For instance, going from the Phone 4 to 5 they completely changed the shape of the charger, forcing everyone to buy a new type of charger and making the old one obsolete.

3. Not being able to charge your phone and listen to music through headphones at the same time because there is only one outlet on the Iphone 8.
WHY it exists: The outlet on the iPhone to charge is the same outlet you plug in headphones to. Since there can only be one thing plugged in at a time, it is impossible for both to fit.

4. When I am trying to study in my room but my roommates are being loud in the living room.
WHY it exists: The walls at the Standard Apartment transmitting too much sound between rooms, and my roommates feel the need to socialize and do so in our common space.

5. When you cannot find the right temperature while using the shower, its either too hot or too cold and no matter how slightly you adjust it, its just never right.
WHY it exists: The bodies reaction to cold and warm temperature and adjusting from one to the other and the sensation it causes and what out body perceives as hot or cold.

6. I get too many text messages / calls from people during the day. Over 100 text messages and 5 phone calls, and I simply forget to answer every single one.
WHY it exists: I have over extended myself for the majority of my life and as a result many people need information from me or need to communicate with me.

7. When warm water comes out of the water fountain next to the Standard gym. So after a workout I am forced to drink warm water.
WHY it exists: There is not enough cold water to be distributed to all of the water fountains.

8. Room mates who do not know how to cook food properly and set off the fire alarm in our room at 7 in the morning.
WHY it exists: smoke is emitted from burning food which triggers the fire alarm to believe there is a fire and thus makes a very loud noise, waking everyone up from there sleep to alert us that there may potentially be a fire.

9. Waking up early in the morning for my 8 o’clock class and having to leave the warmth and comfort of my bed.
WHY it exists: There were no other times available to the class I needed credit for.

10. Walking around campus and having to wait for the light to turn white in order to walk across the street. I am typically late and have to walk fast and these hinder my ability to be on time.
WHY it exists: The lights that indicate you are able to start walking are in coordination with the street lights. If you cross when you are not supposed to it is considered Jaywalking and you can be issued a citation.

11. The line at Fat Daddy’s Located in Midtown is always so long that it could possibly take hours to get in.
WHY it exists: There are over 50,000 students at the University of Florida and not enough bars to satisfy the amount of people who want to participate in night life.

12. Driving on I-95 south to or from Miami, the ignorant drivers and overall aggressive attitude.
WHY it exists: An abundance of people constantly going to and leaving the city of Miami, not enough major roads to get everyone there safely and in a calm manner.

13. Spam emails that are sent nearly every second of the day and just completely fill up your inbox, resulting in you not reading emails that are vital.
WHY it exists: Companies use of email marketing to target and draw in buyers to their products. Also to update customers on promotions and sales that they are having.

14. Doing group projects online with people you have never met before / will never meet and trying to communicate effectively and get a good grade.
WHY it exists: Class size exceeding the number professors on campus resulting in large online classes that facilitate group work.

15. People who watch tv/ movies without subtitles.
WHY it exists: Some people are audio concentrated learners, while I comprehend words best by reading them. So to get fully involved in a show I must read the words that are being said rather than just hearing them.

16. When the University of Florida bus drivers drive off without you even though you were a second late to getting to the bus stop, and see you running after the bus but do not stop anyways.
WHY it exists: either lack of sympathy or a strict need to follow scheduled bus routes and times.

17. Wearing sneakers that are just half a size too big and end up giving you a blister on the back of your heel.
WHY it exists: Since the shoe is slightly too big, it rubs against the back of my heel every time I take a step resulting in the skin there to be slowly peeled off resulting in a blister.

18. Washing white clothes and an article of dark clothing ending up in that load, turning some of the white clothes red / blue etc.
WHY it exists: While being washed and dried, colors from the dark clothes bleed off and transfer on to the white clothes.

19. Buying 5 pairs of new socks because I always seem to not have socks and then a few weeks later not being able to find any clean socks ever.
WHY it exists: Socks are such a trivial piece of clothing that they easily get left places or forgotten about and that is why I think I seem to lose so many pairs.

20. Having to fill in my eyebrows every morning before going out in public.
WHY it exists: my eyebrows are naturally very thin and light, I color them to make them more full / prominent. I have been doing it for so long at this point I feel uncomfortable not.

Reflection:

I found this assignment to be rather challenging because from a young age we are taught to think positively. That the overall quality of your life will be significantly better if you focus on the good rather than the bad. That being said, annoyances occur everyday and while we as humans endure them, they do effect us. No matter how positive you are, being “bugged” by things is merely inevitable. I appreciated this assignment because it was a way to vent about the small things that happen that I usually don’t get the chance to express them. Furthermore I enjoyed this task because we were made to think of the reason WHY our daily annoyances occur. Revealing why it happens and where it stems from is a good start to being able to avoid things that bug us. Rather than just accepting them as irritations, if we look at them as things that can be prevented we are on the route to making our lives just a bit easier !

  1. Good afternoon Emily!

I completely agree with your bug's number 1 and 20. It wasn't until reading your list that I realized I too have many brow/ makeup related bugs I didn't think to include. I also agree it was nice to get the chance to actually write down the small things we never get to express normally. Thinking about the why behind all these seemed to help improve or at least accept many common annoyances.

  2. Hey Emily!

This was really interesting for me to read as guy, having no experience and cosmetics. I totally agree with your number 11, however. Midtown definitely needs a new bar, the lines on friday and Saturday nights are ridiculous. Whoever opens the next big bar at UF is going to make a lot of money. There's definitely an opportunity there, maybe I should buy Cantina and bring it back.
